Geocache Description:

...and then the Earth went dark.

On August 21st, Columbia will be in the direct path of totality for a total solar eclipse! This will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental United States since February 26th, 1979. What better way to celebrate this momentous occasion than to have a geo-event!

What is a solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse is a lineup of the Sun, the Moon, and Earth. The Moon, directly between Sun and Earth, will cast a shadow onto our planet. If you're in the dark part of that shadow, you'll see a total eclipse. Luckily, Columbia will be right in the middle of the darkest part of the shadow!

Normally, you can't look at the Sun without doing some serious damage to your eyes. That's not a good thing. The only time that the Sun can be viewed safely with the naked eye is during a total eclipse, when the Moon completely covers the disk of the Sun. That means for a brief moment, we can all gaze directly at this spectacular wonder! How cool is that?

This geo-event will start at 1:00 p.m. and end at 1:30 p.m. Since we will be on the center line, we'll have a whole 2 minutes and 36 seconds of totality here, starting at 1:12 p.m.

Make plans now to visit the always beautiful American Legion Park for this once-in-a-lifetime event! See you there!
