Park, Not Parking Lot
When I first came to Des Moines, the west side of the capitol was a big parking lot. In the capitol there are pictures of soldiers returning from WWI, on the lush green lawns where the future parking lots would someday be built. Fast forward to 2006 and the parking lots were removed and the land turned into a park.
The following is from the State of Iowa website:
“Parking lots west of the State Capitol were removed during the summer of 2006 to make way for a people's park - the West Capitol Terrace - with pedestrian paths, gathering spaces, benches, and native trees and flowers. Phases I and II of the project are complete. Phase III – which includes a fountain and outlying trees, terracing sidewalks and additional plants - is pending appropriation of funding.”
