WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU BUILT A HOUSE FOR THE FAIRIES? WOULD THEY COME TO VISIT? For the last 80 years, residents of Monhegan Island, Maine have been building fairy houses in the woods. Fairy Houses - Small dwellings made out of natural materials built in hollow logs, nooks and crannies in trees, holes in the ground, between branches of bushes. THE REQUIREMENTS FOR LOGGING THIS CACHE ARE VERY SPECIFIC: 1. Sign the log. The log is in a small container in a split of a tree. It is quite visible. You do not have to search a fairy house to find it. 2. Build a Fairy House. You must build a fairy house to log this cache. 3. Describe your fairy house in your on-line log. Where you put it, what materials you used, etc. If you have a digital camera, please take a picture. You do not have to take a picture to log the cache. Give enough detail about your house so that I can find it and take a picture if you can't. 4. MOST IMPORTANT: You must use only materials "offered" by nature - pieces of bark, dry grass, berries lying on the ground, pine cones, acorns, stones, seeds, shells, feathers, dry pods, sticks, dried thistles, milk weed pods, etc. PLEASE NOTE: Fairies will not live in a house made with living materials that have been picked or killed. Please respect the living plant material. Do not pick or remove mosses, flowers or any living thing. Please do not remove material from other houses to make your own. Come back and check on your house from time to time. You are welcome to make improvements or changes as you like. Houses not meeting the guidelines will be removed and logs deleted. Attached are photos of the houses LFNY and I built. Except for the shells, polished/colored stones, all materials were found in the park. I will take and post pictures of the area every couple of weeks. You might think about making this your last cache of the day and gathering material as you go.
