Cache is hidden in an ancient lava flow. Road to get close is paved (Hwy 6) but to get to cache, it is recommended to take a 4WD or hike it (kinda long) Dirt road is VERY dusty and silty. Dirt road is flat, so you can hike it. Short climb up a small incline to get to main area.
OK, cache is hidden among the boulders and rocks in an ancient lava field. It is in a black 30mm ammo case, with lots of stickers on it. Standard contents, +camera. Please take a picture of yourself! Main abjective of cache is to have a look at the massive lava field it is hidden in. Keep an eye out for interesting rocks! Since this is in remote area, please remember to bring lots of water, as there is none out there. Make sure your vehicle has lots of gas in it!

asm_patricia and I were out exploring the lava flows in this area. We found a lot of really neat rock and minerals in the lava flows and looked at all the old cinder cones. It was a really neat trip. We will have to go back do some more exploring. TFTC!!

 August 20, 2009 by Me & Bucky (8275 found)

Bucky & I found this one while cruising south on the fourth day of our trip down to Las Vegas from Northeast Oregon. We stayed last night in the upper campground of Great Basin National Park, and would hike to the top of Wheeler Peak and drive west to Lunar Crater before the day was over.

Got here right at sunset, so we had to hurry out into the lava field to find the cache. I always love caches that take you to lava flows. It is neat to see what the "raw" rock looks like that comes out of the earth, and interesting to see how long plants take to establish and grow. It was a warm day today (in the low 100s) and the rock was radiating alot of heat.

Thanks for the cache!!
