Just a Quarter Mile More Traditional Geocache

This is the 2nd cache we placed and we think it’s a really neat spot!
**NOTE – If you have SMALL CHILDREN along be sure you READ the page before you set out!** The cache is in the area of the steep canyon walls of Spring Creek canyon, and is just down around the bend a bit from the Strato Bowl area.
This location is just a nice spot to look at the canyon or have a picnic. It is a good way to add a little to the hike if the trip to the Strato Bowl was not quite enough. As the name says, it’s “Just a Quarter Mile More,” from the Strato Cache II.In this area we found a couple sights not to be missed. First were two large big horn sheep from a herd that inhabit the area of these steep canyon walls. Next, we found this location, with a spectacular view of the canyon and the walls of the North side. The canyon is 3/10th of a mile across at this point and about 500 feet deep. The area on top of the ridge across from the cache is the bedding area for a large herd of bighorn sheep. They are often observed by hikers here, so bring your binoculars and camera.To find the cache, park at the gate along Hwy 16 at N43º 58.186 / W103º 20.310. Hike the road in for about 7/10th of a mile to the area of the Strato Bowl. The GPS will lead you down the trail, and eventually down a slight hill. At some point you will need to leave the trail and head through the trees. ** NOTE TO PARENTS HIKING WITH CHILDREN. ***The hike and the cache are appropriate for them, as there is a flat area to walk around on and the cache itself is not in a dangerous place. There is room to sit or have a picnic together when you come out of the thick trees to the cache area. BUT, have CONTROL of your children and do not let them run ahead. The outer edge of the flat area has a vertical drop of about 100 feet. The sides are also about that far as well, so be careful!The cache is a .30cal ammo box, camouflaged to match it’s surroundings. It is placed back from the edge of the cliff a safe distance and is hidden by live foliage. When placed it contained:- A log book and 2 pencils- A “Navy F-14 Tomcat” Travel Bug- A camera for you to take a picture of you or your group- Several items for both boys and girls to gather up. I have noticed many caches do not contain items specific for girls hiking with their family, so we tried to remedy this situation in this cache. Even with that in mind I STILL could not get my 17-year-old daughter off of the couch to come along! Any suggestions on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated.
