How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Moat Mountain is a spectacular ridge that rises to the West of the Saco River and is visible from anywhere along the "strip" in North Conway, NH. The Moat Mountain Trail traverses the entire ridge providing magnificent views from numerous outlooks and burned over summits. With the help of the geocaching community we are going to place a pyramid of caches along the Moat Mountain Trail starting at the trailhead on Dugway Road and ending at West Side Road a distance of 9.7 miles.

.

NOTE: IT IS NO LONGER A REQUIREMENT TO PLACE A CACHE TO CLAIM A FIND ON ANY CACHE IN THIS SERIES. THE SERIES IS NOW COMPLETE END TO END. A SERIES OF 30 CACHES HAVE BEEN PLACED ALONG THIS SPECTACULAR TRAIL FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT. WE HAVE LEFT THE ORIGINAL RULES BELOW SO YOU CAN SEE HOW IT USED TO WORK.

Here is how it works.

1. Until the pyramid is complete you can't log any cache in this series unless you place the next one in the series further up the trail.

2. The first cache has been placed near the trailhead on Dugway Road.

3. The first finder must find the first cache and sign the log.

4. The first finder must then place a cache a minimum of 0.2 miles further up the trail.

5. The cache can be any size container but the find difficulty cannot be greater than 2. The cache must be winter friendly and placed at least 3 feet off the ground. It can be no further than 100 feet from the trail.

6. The first finder will write a note log that they have found the first cache and placed and submitted for review the second cache which shall be a Traditional cache called Moat Mountain Progressive Challenge #2. The Short Description should say "This cache is being placed as part of the Moat Mountain Progressive Challenge Series. Please go to waypoint GC14Z4R for complete rules." When this new cache has been published they may change their note log to a find log by indicating the waypoint number of the published cache in their log. Find logs that do not have a published waypoint will be deleted.

7. The next finder finds cache #1 and #2 and places #3. This finder writes a note log for #1 and #2 and changes them to found logs when #3 is published by adding the waypoint to each log.

8. If there are multiple members in a caching group, each member must place and have published a new cache adhering to all the guidelines on this cache page in order for them to log as found any caches found on that trip. For example if two geocachers find cache #1, one must place cache #2 and get it published before he can log #1 as found. The other must place #3, at least 0.2 miles further along the trail from #2, and get it published before they can log as found #1, etc. Group members cannot log any new caches the day they are placed, but must return after they are published to sign the log (and place a new cache). You may never log as found your own cache. There is no limit on how many times you can return.

9. On any visit, it is not necessary to find all the previous caches in the series, in fact, you don't have to find any of them in order to place the next cache in the series. Remember, if you do find caches, you may not log any of them, even if you find 10 of them, until you place and have published the next cache in the series. In the above case you would add the published waypoint of the new cache to all ten logs when you change your note logs to found logs.

All caches in this series can be logged only once by each geocacher.

10. If independent parties place caches in the same day all caches that meet the separation guidelines will be valid. Otherwise, it will be the first cache published that will be valid. If your new cache is not published you cannot log any finds that day so read the logs before departing to see if any caches are pending and check the logs of any caches you find to see if there is anybody ahead of you on the trail. If multiple valid caches are placed and published in the above scenario, it may be necessary to change the name of one or more caches to keep the series consistent.

11. If other caches, not part of this series, are placed along this trail, a separation distance of at least 0.2 miles from them must also be maintained. For example, if there is a cache in this series 3.3 miles up the trail and someone places a cache, not part of this series, at 3.6 miles, the next cache in this series can not be placed until at least 3.8 miles. The cache could not be placed at 3.5 miles because it would violate the separation rule to the cache not part of the series.

12. Although not necessary, an individual or a group can place as many new caches as they wish beyond the one per geocacher required for logging any found caches. The separation requirement between caches must be maintained and all other rules followed.

13. Hipointer and Capiti will be the final arbitrators on the interpretation of these rules.

14. Once the pyramid has been completed the need to place new caches will be eliminated.

15. If you return on a subsequent day to find any new caches that might have been placed since your last visit you still have to place a new cache in the series, even if you placed one before, in order to log your finds on that day.

16. New caches do not necessarily have to be placed in order. For example, If you can fit a cache in between #3 and #4 that meets the separation rule of 0.2 miles from both #3 and #4 you may place that cache and call it #3.5.

17. All caches that you have previously found in the series, but not claimed because you didn't place a cache, may be claimed when you place your first cache in the series.

NOTE: THE HEAVY SNOWS OF WINTER 2008 HAVE MADE IT NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO REACH CACHE #12 AND THE SUMMIT OF NORTH MOAT MOUNTAIN FROM THE SOUTH. THEREFORE, WE HAVE STARTED ANOTHER CACHE PYRAMID ON THE NORTH END OF THE TRAIL WHICH WILL GO UP AND OVER NORTH MOAT MOUNTAIN AND CONNECT WITH THE CACHE TRAIL COMING UP FROM THE SOUTH. SEE GC18P6Y and GC18GMG.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CRASHCO, ADABRANLOG, ROOSTERSTING AND DJ FOR BEING THE FIRST TO COMPLETE THIS SERIES WITH AN END TO END TRAVERSE TAKING 13+ HOURS IN DEEP SNOW CONDITIONS ON MARCH 30, 2008. SEE LOGS BELOW TO ENJOY THEIR ADVENTURE!

NOTE: JULY 2012 MOAT MOUNTAIN #22 HAS BEEN ARCHIVED. IF YOU WISH TO REPLACE IT, YOU MAY.
