Geocache Description:

Earth Day clean up at Cockenoe (cock-ee-nee) Island in Westport

Raindate: ???

This is a hydro-event so you will need a canoe, kayak or other means of hydro-transport to get to the island.

A special event permit has been obtained for parking at Compo Beach Marina for this event. We will be launching from the marina at 8:00 A.M. to paddle to Cockenoe Island.

Directions From the East: Take I-95 South to exit 18 to Sherwood Island State Park and continue 0.16 miles. Take the ramp to US-1/Westport and continue 0.09 miles. Take Sherwood Island Connector/Route 476 North and continue 0.19 miles. Turn left onto Greens Farms Road and continue 1.65 miles. Turn left onto Compo Road South and continue 0.88 miles. Turn slight right onto Compo Beach Road. From the West: Take I-95 North. Take the Route 136 exit 17 to Route 33/Westport/Saugatuck and continue 0.27 miles. Turn slight left onto Saugatuck Avenue/Route 136. Continue to follow Route 136 for 0.37 miles. Turn right onto Bridge Street/Route 136 and continue 0.50 miles. Turn right onto Compo Road South for 0.88 miles. Turn slight right onto Compo Beach Road.

The Westport Conservation Department will be providing us with garbage bags and latex gloves. The director of the Conservation Department is working with the marine police to provide transportation of the refuse from the island to the mainland but we may have to transport it ourselves. If anyone has a boat we can use as a garbage barge or has any useful suggestions please post a note to this cache page. This page will be updated as more information is available.

Please bring whatever food and beverages you will need for the day. We will be meeting at John's Best Pizza (365 Post Rd W, Westport, CT) after we're done getting all mucky and gross.

Thanks in advance to everyone who participates in this event! We thank you, Signal thanks you and the Earth thanks you!
