Grubar Channel was named after a Slovenian Jesuit and planner Gabrijel Grubar. The City Government of Vienna entrusted him with the drainage of Ljubljana Marshes. They started to build Grubar Channel in 1773 and it was ended between 1780 and 1782. On 25 November 1780 water flew in the newly built channel for the first time. In 1829 the channel was deepened, which proved to be a good solution because it reduced the risk of annual flooding in low areas of Ljubljana Marshes.
Gabrijel Grubar studied philosophy and theology in Graz. In 1755 he joined the Jesuits and became a monk. Grubar also planned the palace in the late Baroque style which is the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia today. In 1784 he went to Russia and there some buildings were built according to his plans. In 1800 he was a rector of the Jesuit College in St. Petersburg, in 1802 he became a Jesuit general of a Russian Province and he had a big influence on the tsar Paul I of Russia. He also contributed a lot of to the Pope’s recognition of the Jesuits in Russia.
