Geocache Description:

How does a multi-billion dollar biotech company deal with a wild cat problem?

*** IMPORTANT! The posted coordinates were for the original location of the Genen-cat mansion. From this point, you must extrapolate approximately 0.1 miles to the SSE to find their new home. Yes, I know this is a little vague for us scientists, but you can't miss their new home's location.

After you've found their home, you now need to be precise to find their favorite wildlife overlook (aka "dinner menu"). From their mansion, project 315 ft bearing 244 degrees. ***

Leaving much too late on a Friday evening, I noticed that I am parked to a rather interesting landscape decision by Genentech.

A recent company policy clearly stated that employees can not have any pets at the workplace. Not even a stupid fish. However, the Genen-cats have been a long part of Genen-history. The faceless defenders and caretakers of the Genen-cats spent months negotiating an acceptable way to let the Genen-cats co-exist with the new company policy. Of course, officially there are no Genen-cats, but don't tell them that. It's kinda a "don't ask, don't tell" thing.

During the weekend and evening, you can drive up and park next to the cache. During the work week, you'll have to park in one of the nearby public parking areas if there is room. If you happen to work at Genentech, the cache difficulty raises to 4.5 during the work week since you won't be able to find a legal parking space anywhere on campus. Even visitors may be challenged during the week despite the nearby "visitor" parking lots.

Cache is a large micro with a bright blue cap about the size of two film canisters. This is the 3rd time this cache has been hidden. Please hide it well since this is a high traffic area (in both senses of the phrase). Very small items will fit, but BRING YOUR OWN PEN!

And hey, while you're here, be sure to take in the great views of the bay (none of which I can see while working inside the building).

*** UPDATE 7/30/2005 *** After many late-night deliberations, the Genen-cats home has been moved not once, not twice, but THREE times until it finally appears not even to be located on Genentech property any more. Is this the end of the Genen-cats? Have the pet-police finally gotten their way with their pet policy? Only time will tell. The good news is that the Genen-cats were able to keep their landscaper. We can only hope that the Genen-cats will enjoy their old home in a much safer, although windier, part of the neighborhood.

*** UPDATE 9/12/2005 *** Well, this cache seems to have more lives than the Genen-cats. I'm starting to suspect that the Genen-cat caretakers don't like geocaches on the Genen-cat's property. Never fear, you can still enjoy their home and then project yourself 315 ft away at a 244 degree bearing and find the cache. I was out of eensy-bitsy trade-items for this 3rd cache replacement, so only the log is in the container for now.
