How Geocaching Works
This cache is named "Totaled" because children don't listen to their daddies. My co-owner of this cache is the child I am referring to. Baby "G" a nursing student at the time.
While visiting the family two years ago in January, just before beginning her second semester of nursing school, she and a friend planned to go to San Antonio to a dance club to celebrate the holiday. Heavy rain showers were falling during the day and evening hours causing flooding in areas and slick roadways. As parents are, regardless of their children's age we strongly suggested and pleaded with them that they should stay at home and not to travel in these types of conditions, especially that late at night.
As usual, Their comment was, "we are 21 and we know what we are doing". They went ahead on their way.
Yes, they were 21 but they did not know what they were doing or did they? I just felt so uneasy that evening and even angry at the girls and sure enough about 45 minutes later we received a call from Baby "G" that she had an accident. She stated that they were OK and the deputy sheriff of Kendal County was there investigating the accident. She explained, As she was beginning her descent down the long hill her car crossed the road out of control and glanced off the first set of guard rails spinning them back across the roadway barely missing an approaching vehicle and stopping on the side of the road in the direction they were traveling originally.
Immediately her mother and I drove to the accident. Approaching the car I looked for the damage and the first thing I saw was a flat right rear tire and no damaged wheel. Walking around the car I notice that both air bags were deployed but no exterior structural damage was visible yet. I continued around to the front of the car were I didn't see any damage either. Rounding the car I saw that the left front fender had minimal damage and basically the only damage to the car. The deputy remained with both girls for their safety until we arrived. He helped me change the flat tire and I was able to drive the car home.
As we were ready to go home the deputy was summoned to assist with another accident further down the long hill. Later we had heard that there were a total of 3 accidents that very evening, one serious.
Yes, we are very thankful that everything worked out alright that evening. Both girls stayed at the house and watched a movie and visited.
Even though the car was structural repairable but the cost to replace both air bags and dash components deemed that the car was "Totaled".
