Geocache Description:

The Scottish Geocaching Community with the support of the UK Reviewers have taken on the on-going maintenance of Billy Twiggers caches.

Billy Twigger suffered serious injuries whist placing a Geocache on Bute and a year on is still recuperating in the spinal unit at Glasgow's Southern General Hospital.

I myself a late starter to Geocaching never had the opportunity to meet Billy finding my first cache in August last year shortly before Billy's accident. Incidentally my first cache was one of Billy's "Johnny Weismuller's pond" at Loch Tarsan in Cowal. I thoroughly enjoyed Billy's caches on Bute, they are never as straight forward as they may appear and alot of thought and planning went into their creation.

For this reason myself and Flyfishermanbob and I'm sure many others think it would be a good opportunity for more of our fellow cachers to experience these caches whilst checking them over before winter sets in.

Weather Forecast for Saturday 22nd September

A social open to all at 5pm has been arranged in the The Esplanade Hotel (pictured above), Rothesay for a bite to eat and a blether. I checked out the pub last Saturday and it seems to be ok they have a good menu reasonably priced and allow kids. It is undergoing renovations at the moment but that is having no effect on the bar. When advising you will attend can you also say how many seats you will need in the pub as they are putting seats aside for us as the pub maybe busy as it will be the holiday weekend.

So here's the logistics:

As Bute is an expensive place to get to with Cal-Mac, myself and FFB plan to have our cars on Bute to act as a taxi service between caches thus allowing people to come across as foot passengers. Although if anyone else wishes to bring their car over and can maybe help ferry people around as well that would be much appreciated. Cal-Mac operate two services to Bute firstly from Wemyss Bay and the second service runs from Colintraive. (click on the links for timetables and fares.)

A suggested starting time for those wishing to do the more out lying caches in the south of the Island on the West Island Way is 09.30 at Rothesay. Those caches being:

What an Intrusion! (Bute) GCKBFA
Hawk’s Neb (Bute) GCM8JW
To the Lighthouse (Woolf) GCM8JX
Terracotta Warriors (Bute) GCN1K8
Rockfall (Bute) GCM8K0

I would say a comfortable walk of approx 2 - 2 1/2 hours.

The only other cache on the south of the island that will take some time is The Plan GCA8D4< which can be teamed up with St Blane's (Bute) GCM8JZ< and Causeway Columns? (Bute) GCKBGQ<. These should take no longer than 2 hours. All the other caches should take no longer than 20 - 30 minutes to complete.

Those indicating they intend to attend the event will receive an email containing mobile phone numbers for myself and FFB for making contact on Bute. We would ask you to reply giving an approximate time of arrival and at which ferry terminal so we can schedule our pickups.

A big thanks to deceangi for his assistance with the administration of Billy's caches.

The primary intention of this event is to maintain Billy's caches on Bute but for those attending who have already completed Billy's caches I have placed 4 new easy drive by caches. These will be published in the days before the event and I promise theres no more Good to Talk's among them!!

Think thats about it and look forward to seeing you all on Bute on the 22nd.
