Cache aux poissons Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Bunya: I had got a report that two of my Fitzgerald Bay caches (Chelonia and Point to Point) might be missing. To reduce my maintenance load, I decided to archive these caches, along with my other nearby cache, Cache aux poissons. As it turned out, the Point to Point cache had gone, but the Chelonia one was OK. I picked up the two remaining caches. Thanks to all who made the trip to find these caches.

Geocache Description:

A bit of a climb, but not too far. The view's not bad.

The transit of Venus in June 2004 was used by historians to remind us that this rare phenomenon, which also occurred in June 1769, was the main reason that an English naval chappie called Cook sailed to the south Pacific at that time. Only after observing the transit did he go on to map and ‘claim’ New Zealand and the east coast of Australia. But for this, the European settlement of the great southern land may have been done by the French. One French explorer was Louis Freycinet who took part in surveying Terre Napoleon (we call it South Australia). Some bloke called Flinders had been here first (only just!) and made up English names for this area, which now predominate. (As usual, the names used by the indigenous population didn’t count.) A few French names remain, particularly for places where Freycinet did survey first, for example on the south coast of Kangaroo Island.

All of which won’t help much in finding the cache, but we thought you’d like to know.

Oh, by the way, the cache is near the Freycinet Trail and overlooks fish farms. You can park in a nearby camping area.

The container is a one litre plastic box, the contents of which have a “fishy” theme.
