Geocache Description:

THE COORDINATES ABOVE ARE NOT THE REAL COORDINATES.

The Concept:

This cache is so named in part because it marks my 25th active cache hide. It is the continuation of Emmett Five-Oh: The Traveling Cache - Chapter One. If you already know what I'm talking about, skip to "Cut to the chase" below. This will be a traveling cache, meaning it will travel about to who knows where. The concept is simple, once ten finds have been logged for this cache, or shortly thereafter, someone will move it to a new location.

  • Once ten finds have been logged for this cache, the tenth finder (or any subsequent finder should the tenth finder decline to move it) will move the container to a newly approved location.
  • The newly created cache will be named "... : The Traveling Cache - Chapter Three"
  • Prior to relocating the cache, the mover will place a small container (not a micro) with a log book and coordinates to the Chapter Three location in the spot where the Chapter Two cache was hidden. Some small trade items should also be included in the small container left behind.Ask CacheNCarryMA for contact infomation when replacing it.
  • Once Chapter Three is in place, the same rules apply. After ten finds have been logged someone else will move it to a new location, repeating the process in exactly the same manner.
  • Cachers can have multiple logs in the same log book since the original log book will move with the container and each new spot will qualify as a new find.
  • As an alternate means to find the new location, each subsequent chapter should have a puzzle to solve, similar to the puzzle on this page.
The puzzle will involve identifying three favorite caches and providing the distances from a stage of those caches to the new location where the next "chapter" has been hidden. In so doing, those who create new chapters are encouraged to applaud other noteworthy caches.

This model need not be followed exactly if someone has an idea they think would be good that deviates a bit, but it would be good to have a common theme in which the puzzle references other well done and/or unique caches. While Chapter One is a mystery cache and has a "?" icon, all subsequent chapters should be recorded as multi caches since the puzzle aspect would be only one of the ways the cache could be found.

The Puzzle:

In keeping with the original concept of Emmett Five-Oh: The Traveling Cache - Chapter One I will list the distance from Chapter Two to some favorite caches of mine. There happens to be one from each of three caching "eras" - with waypoint names four, five, and six characters long. Even though, for my own hides it's "all about the container," there's nothing better than a cache with interesting scenery or a breathtaking vista. In preparing Chapter Two, I noted that GolfBall's Great Island Cache (GCJXHG) in Wellfleet, MA is 73.032 miles away from Chapter Two. While many people love the "Dune" cache nearby, I think Great Island has a little more variety. Speaking of Massachusetts scenery, nothing beats Jane & Bob's Just For The Halibut (GC822) cache on Massachusetts's other cape - Cape Ann. It has the combination of a natural vista and man-made sights - granite quarry slag tumbling down into the sea. A geocaching crow flying from "Just For The Halibut" to Chapter Two would cover 47.098 miles. And finally, I know it won't help you much, but the Firestone (GC78) cache by Scott Hinds is 2681.619 miles away. "Firestone" is California's oldest active geocache. A deceptively strenuous hike brings the cacher along a narrow trail cut into a steep hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The search ends dramatically at an overturned, rusted, wrecked car.

Cut to the chase:

Reference Cache Coordinates Distance (mi.)*
Great Island (GCJXHG) N 41° 55.192 W 070° 03.967 73.032
Just For The Halibut (GC822) N 42° 41.502 W 070° 37.879 47.098
Firestone (GC78) N 37° 54.637 W 122° 37.590 2681.619
* The "Great Circle" method was used to calculate these distances

From "Emmett Five-Oh"
"It wouldn't be right if I did not mention TNC 1 - How Far? since this puzzle is modeled after that one. It's been months since I solved the TNC 1 puzzle but I still haven't made it to the cache. It seems I took an Insidious detour along the way. I did have fun banging out the coordinates and will eventually make the journey to the cache location. At any rate, if you are having trouble solving this, maybe a look at TNC 1 will help."

Rules of the Road:

PLEASE READ BEFORE MOVING THE CACHE
All subsequent chapters of the Traveling Cache will be subject to the prevailing rules governing cache hides. Each will require examination and approval by a geocaching.com reviewer.

All subsequent chapters should also have a direct link on the cache page connecting cachers to this page so that all will have easy access to the rules and guidelines.

When you move the Traveling Cache, you must leave a container in its place and it must contain at a minimum: a log book, a few small items, and the coordinates (or other suitable directions) to where the next chapter will be hidden. This means you need to scope out and mark the new location before you retrieve the cache.

To avoid any confusion, the "mover" should post a note, 24-hours or more in advance, alerting others of your intent to move the cache. Once you post this note, you have essentially reserved the right to move the cache.

Chapter Two and all subsequent editions of the Traveling Cache will be multi cache/puzzle cache hybrids. They can be found in one step by solving a puzzle or multi steps by finding coordinates at the prior cache location. While Chapter One is a mystery cache and has a "?" icon, all subsequent chapters should be recorded as multi caches since the puzzle aspect would be only one of the ways the cache could be found.

The "rules fo the road" posted here should be copied exactly and pasted at the bottom of the cache page for all subsequent editions of the Traveling Cache.

Please Note: This cache is hidden on private property. Permission for the cache has been granted by the managers of the area. Use discretion during your search. Introduce yourself if you get the chance!
