23 mai 1706 eut lieu à Ramillies l’une des plus grandes
batailles d’Europe. Elle opposa John Churchill, duc de
Marlborough, à la tête de la « Grande Alliance »
(anglaise, hollandaise et allemande), au duc de Villeroy, maréchal de Louis XIV, commandant une
armée franco-espagnole. Cette bataille décisive de la guerre de
succession d’Espagne fut remportée par les Anglais. Comme en
1815, à Waterloo. Mais cela, c’est une autre
histoire…
The Battleof Ramillies, 23 May 1706, was a major battle in the War of the
Spanish Succession. The Duke of Marlborough, leading British, Dutch, and German troops,
defeated a French army led by the duc
de Villeroy. One century later,
in Waterloo,the French army lost again a famous battle, but
that’s another story…
