Jolly Roger

In the autumn of 1864, at the height of the American Civil War, the Confederate raider Shenandoah received orders to "seek out and utterly destroy" the whaling fleets of New England as part of an effort to bleed the Union of its economic strength - an undertaking that met its greatest success when the raider fell upon a fleet of whalers working the waters near Alaska's Little Diomede Island and sank more than two dozen ships in a frenzy of destruction.

But more important than the tally of damage was the date the final conflagration began: June 22, the longest day of the year, and almost a full three months after General Lee lay down his sword at Appomattox. Contrary to contemporary belief, it was not on the battlefield in Virginia but high in the Arctic where the last shot of the American Civil War was fired.

There is a little known story of another raider ship that was at work on the high seas at that time, the Scobey. The Scobey's captain was the notorious Tundra Tim and he was looking for treasure to raid. Not long after arriving in the cold waters of Cook Inlet he heard from his first mate, MTBoy in the crow's nest "There she is, the Slat Rat, 10 miles north and the sails are down!" he shouted. Tundra Tim knew the captain well, the fearless Santa Bro. He ordered his ship around Fire Island with full sails. Water shooting twenty feet over the bow with each wave, the treasure of Slat Rat would soon be theirs. Northwes rang out the alarm from the decks of the Slat Rat, "Argh! It's the darn Scobey and she's coming fast!" Santa Bro ordered the sails up but soon realized he was losing ground. " Run her into the ground below those cliffs!" he ordered his crew.

He sent AkWhodini below deck to get the treasure and assemble a landing party. Just before the Scobey reached the Slat Rat, the cagey Captain Santa Bro turned a sharp 90 degrees and headed for the bluffs. "Let her have it!" he yelled. The gunners, also known as Team Angry Balls, fired all the starboard guns all at once. Shells smashed through the masts of the Scobey and took out most of her rigging and now Scobey is three sheets to the wind.

Tundra Tim told his crew to get into the boats and take over the ship but it was too late, the Slat Rat had run hard aground below the cliffs. The Slat Rat began to take water over the poop and soon, the Slat Rat was pooped, sinking stern first into the mud. AkWhodini and his hand chosen crew went ashore with the treasure all loaded in one chest. As they made their way up the cliffs, musket balls fired from the waters edge were buzzing by at a frightening rate. It seemed they carried the chest for miles inland and buried it in the side of a small hill. They drew a detailed map of where they hid the treasure. Struggling their way through the devils club on their way back to the shore they ran into Tundra Tim's marauders. Confusion set in, AKWhodini hid the map where it would be safe. Someone yelled, "Take Whateveryouwant" The rest is lost to history…

Surprisingly, nobody died in this encounter but the map to the treasure chest was lost forever or so it would seem. You have studied this almost forgotten battle in history for years and you feel that the map is at the coordinates listed above.

Good Luck!

Congratulations to Santa Bro FTF!

Digital Dan & I are visiting the area...here from WI. We were visiting some of the caches along the trail and decided to make this multi our final for the day. Had a little trouble finding the first, but got the info we needed and moved on the the final. As we were walking to the final cache, I looked down and found REAL CASH!! Someone dropped a $5 bill on the bike trail. Kinda like getting a "2-fer" going for this one. LOL Found the final no problem and loved the container. I dropped the Red Night Racer Geocoin in, SL TFTC...very well done and fun I must add!

No maps at stage one. Stage two container is wet inside. Most of the trade items are soggy, damp or rusty. We tried tidying up a bit, but still could use some TLC.
