Due to popular demand, a session of “Rally School” will be held in the Sacramento, CA area. This is a great prep session for folks planning to participate in the GBES 2nd Annual Navigational Geocache Rally. It is also a lot of fun for cachers who want to spend a little while running around and exploring a beautiful and historic local park.
PARTICIPATION IN RALLY SKOOL IS OPEN TO ALL GEOCACHERS, NOT JUST THOSE ENTERED IN THE GBES RALLY!!
Rally School consists of some brief instruction and an actual mini-rally that will give participants a preview of how the rally will operate. We’ll start with a simulated checkpoint at the park to give you a chance to try hunting for a few Checkpoint Challenges so you'll be ready when May 20th rolls around.
School will open at 11:30 on Saturday, March 12. It will remain open for new students until 1:30. Students who enroll will have one half hour to complete the curriculum in order to receive credit. Sorry over-achievers, it is strictly pass-fail, no A+’s for finishing early, although it is rumored that teacher will accept shiny apples and the like.
Afterward, you’ll be given navigation instructions so that you can practice your road navigation skills in the wilds of the Sacramento Area. Rumor has it that the route will take you through several cache-rich environments, while leaving you enough time to travel into Sacramento to eat dinner at one of our fine local Chinese-American buffets.
Bring your GPSr, a pen and a walking stick. Don’t forget your download cables so we can dump the road navigation waypoints right into your GPSr!
For those interested in local history, this park encompasses the site of the Penryn Granite works, which was established in 1864 by a Welsh immigrant, Griffith Griffith. It contains the ruins of the first polishing mill built in California and some of the quarry holes from which the unique Penryn granite was taken. This site is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the California Landmark Program.
The museum building contains some of the original office furniture of the Penryn Granite Works and information on the Griffith family, the granite industry, and the history of the Penryn-Loomis Basin area.
