Fido, un amico vero
Borgo San Lorenzo (FI)
In Piazza Dante, davanti al Municipio di Borgo San Lorenzo c'è una statua dedicata ad un cane. La statua è una pregevole opera dello scultore Salvatore Cipolla, sotto c'è una iscrizione: “A Fido, esempio di fedeltà”.
Che cosa ha fatto questo cane per meritarsi un monumento? Bisogna andare indietro negli anni, esattemente nel 1941 a Luco di Mugello, una frazione di Borgo San Lorenzo, qui vive Carlo Soriani che un giorno trova un cucciolo di cane da caccia ferito e abbandonato. Lo porta a casa e lo cura, i due diventano inseparabili, Carlo è un operaio delle Ceramiche Brunori di Borgo San Lorenzo e tutte le mattine prende la corriera per andare al lavoro, il cane lo accompagna e quando la sera la corriera lo riporta al paese, è nella piazza principale ad attenderlo. Siamo in tempo di guerra, il 30 Dicembre 1943 Borgo San Lorenzo viene bombardata, la stazione ferroviaria e gli opifici sono distrutti, ci sono 103 morti, tra questi c'è Carlo Soriani. Quella sera Carlo non scenderà dalla corriera, il cane lo attende, non si capacita, sale sulla corriera e cerca tra i sedili perché talvolta Carlo si nascondeva per scherzo, ma stavolta non è uno scherzo. Il giorno dopo e dopo ancora per 14 anni filati tutti i giorni Fido sarà puntuale nella piazza del paese alla fermata della corriera ad aspettare Carlo. La storia del cane che attende il padrone alla corriera comincia a circolare, ne parlano i giornali, il cinegiornale Luce fa un servizio su di lui, il comune di Borgo San Lorenzo lo esenta dal portare la medaglietta e la museruola e nel 1957 lo premia con una medaglia d'oro, alla sua morte, il 9 giugno del 1958, Walter Molino gli dedica una copertina sulla Domenica del Corriere.
Fido viene sepolto accanto al cimitero di Luco, dove già era sepolto Carlo, ora Fido ha ritrovato il suo padrone per sempre.

We must go back in the years, in 1941 in Luco del Mugello a village near Borgo San Lorenzo, there lives Carlo Soriani who one day finds a puppy alone and wounded. He brings him home, cures him, the two become inseparable, Carlo is worker in the factory Ceramiche Brunori in Borgo San Lorenzo and every day takes the
coach to go to the work, the dog sees him to the bus stop, and at evening, when the coach is back, he is in the main square of the village waiting for him.
We are in the WWII time, on December 30th, 1943 Borgo San Lorenzo is bombed, the railroad station and the factories are destroyed, 103 are dead, among them there is Carlo Soriani. That evening Carlo will not come down the coach, the dog is waiting, cannot make out why, goes up the coach searching among the seats because sometimes Carlo used to hide himself to make a joke, but this time it is not a joke. The day after and again and again for 14 years every day Fido will be on time in the main sqaure waiting for Carlo at the bus stop. The story of the dog waiting for his master begins to be known, the newspapers and the TV speak about him, in 1957 the municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo gives Fido a Golden Medal and is extempted to pay the dog tax and to bear the muzzle. At his death on June 9th, 1958 a famous italian magazine dedicates him the cover.
Fido is buried besides the cemetery of Luco del Mugello where is buried Carlo Soriani, now Fido has found his master forever.
