Sugarloaf Cache Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Christopher Pike: Unfortunately, this cache page has been archived due to the lack of a timely maintenance resolution. If the owner would like to have it reinstated, please contact me through my profile or email address within 10 days, referencing the GC code and name of the cache. Please note that un-archiving a cache page places it through the same review process as a newly proposed cache, using the cache placement guidelines currently in effect.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and look forward to seeing more of your caches up and running in the future.

Geocache Description:

The cache is located on the Mickelson Trail. It would be a one-star terrain rating, however the last 20 feet goes down a steep bank that shouldn't be terribly difficult.

The Mickelson Trail itself is 109 miles long stretching from Deadwood to Edgemont with 14 trailheads offering parking, self-service pass stations, toilets, and picnic tables. It was built nearly entirely on the rail line constructed by the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad in 1890-1891 and is South Dakota's first and only rails-to-trails project. The Mickelson Trail was opened to the public in 1998 after it had been shut down as the Deadwood-Edgemont Burlington Northern rail line in 1983, and is named after the late Governor George S. Mickelson who perished in a plane crash in 1993.

The trail is well-maintained, with the majority being less than a 3% grade, and passes through a variety of terrain ranging from prairie to mountainsides. This cache is easily accessible to bikes in the summer and snowmobiles in the winter.

The Sugarloaf Trailhead parking lot is located a couple miles south of Lead on Hwy 85, with signs visible from both directions.

We hope you enjoy our first cache!
