There's Something Fishy About This One Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dosido: Looks like another Dosido cache bites the dust! Rumor has it that the ammo box was removed from it's perch, and a stuffed animal hung in it's place.
The location has been compromised, so I'm archiving this one. Will have to see about a replacement cache with something even fishier than this hide...
Thanks to all who found the cache!

Geocache Description:

The Overview

This cache started out as a 3 stage multi, but is now a 2 stage multi-cache, due to muggles continually making off with the 2nd stage (at the dam). The cache is technically in Belchertown, but you can throw a stone to the Bondsville section of Palmer. Follow your GPSr to the coordinates above (first stage), and you will easily find the obvious parking.

The Cache

Since multi-caches are my favorite type, it's about time I get one out there. There are several good multis in the area, and hopefully you'll enjoy this one!

This multi-cache is suitable for all comers. The terrain is flat and mountain bike friendly. The walk, roundtrip, is about 1.5 miles. I've found nearly 400 caches, and I've never found a cache hidden like this one, but I know they have to exist. Something fishy, indeed.

The cache will take you along the path cut by the old Athol-Enfield railway, which eventually became the Boston and Albany's Athol Branch. This line ran from Springfield across Indian Leap into Ludlow and then along the river up through what is now Quabbin to Athol. With the building of the reservoir the line was partially abandoned. You will be quite near the remains of the old Bondsville Fabric Mills on the Swift river - a brownfield site that the town is hoping to get cleaned up. In addition, you'll see remains of the rail spur from the Vermont Central that serviced the mills, and what I surmise is part of the old Boston-Maine that ran through the area. (Thanks to W1QA for helping out with the history of the rail lines here!)

You'll likely run into some fishermen if you visit on the weekend, though they'll probably be on the Palmer side of the river, and likely some adventurous kids on the summer weekends. Feel free to bring a lunch - when you get to the spot to nosh, you'll know!

Since this cache runs along the water and has a lot of cool places to explore, do take care of any youngsters in your group. The cache placements are not dangerously close to the water, so if your GPSr is pointing too close to the water, think again! Also, be aware of the poison ivy that lines the trail at the beginning.

The cache you seek is a .30mm ammo can with all of the usual trimmings.

Cache Extras

If you bring your mountain bike, or just want to take a longer walk or trail run (highly recommended - this is a nice ride), check out Kats Scratch Fever by Katscache just down the path about a mile. Also be sure to stop by Bondsville Heroes, Old Bell by XiaDog & Dingity - an easy walk from the parking area.
