I only found one (the one that does not match the hint). If I'd known ahead of time, I'd have looked for the second one. After finding Backbone Pear, I returned to go down to get Rustic Palm. Thanks for the heads up on this trail.

Drum roll... I actually found the replacement only! I did not stick around that long to search again for the elusive original. Time will tell...

My last Spinal Tap cache turned out to be much more excruciating than planned. Near Rich Route #2 I met a couple of college kids (perhaps) with no GPS and no exact idea where they were going. So after this point I suspended geocaching temporarily to lead them out of the canyon safely to Sullivan Rd. When I got to the gate there it was about 1hr 45 minutes to sunset so I knew my window of opportunity was closing fast. I had seen the connector to the Backbone Trail so I knew exactly where I was going, although I did not know exactly how long it would take. When I finally got up there a warm sun welcomed my arrival. I spent some time there and about 41 minutes before sunset I started heading back down. To my surprise, I got back to the connector 20+ minutes before sunset so I still had time for a couple more caches. However when I reached Sullivan Rd. the sun went down and I did not feel like searching for the ones along Sullivan Rd. with a flashlight. I got back to the car when it was already somewhat dark. Oh, yes: when I log the final (Spinal Tap) I will reveal whether I found the original cache or the replacement (or both).

After getting additional location info from Sue, I went up and looked again. Ground cover is sparse, so even a fallen cache should be easy to see. At this point I'm getting fairly confident it's gone, so (with Sue's permission) I hid a replacement. The coords I measured are a tiny bit different, but within guessing distance, so it might actually be in the same place. Of course I'm going to be very embarrassed when someone else comes along and finds both the old and the new.

Several muggles passed while I was looking and hiding, including one who came up from Rustic Canyon, asked me for the time, when north for a few minutes and came back by. He must have wondered.

At least that's a start, and I continued my streak at Another BBT Cache.
