Geocache Description:

Welcome to the first-ever Dehcho Cache! This is the first in a series that will hopefully, one day, include every community in the Dehcho Region and some other sites of interest to boot!

Fort Liard, NWT is located at the confluence of the Liard and Petitot Rivers, which were once highways for the Dene people who came to this site from as far away as Alberta, BC and the Yukon.

Across the Petitot River from the cache site is a cliff.

Local legend says that, at one time, the people lived atop that cliff because it afforded excellent views of the Liard River, so it was easy to see who was coming and going. It was a time of war.

One day, the people were attacked. The massacre was so violent and bloody that the blood soaked deep into the ground, causing the red stains that you can see on the cliff today.

The area near the cache site offers an excellent view of the cliff, the rivers, Mount Coty (across the Liard River) and several other mountains.

When placed, the cache contained:
- a log book and mechanical pencil with extra lead (please leave in cache)
- 1 mouse trap (in homage to the local trappers)
- 2 parachuting aliens (in homage to the Hudsons Bay and Northwest Companies)
- 1 "Conquest" wooden peg game (nothing to do with trappers and traders - just a fun little game)
- 1 ball of twine
- 1 deck of cards
- 1 indestructable mirror
- 1 screwdriver with adjustable bits

Bison are known to frequent the area. Please keep your head up and avoid these rather large creatures.
