The Dugout Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

OReviewer: As there's been no cache to find for a long time or has had no owner response for at least 30 days, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

The cache is not in or near the Dugout.  Please stay out of the foundation. Please bring a pen.

Dugout or Pit-houses are one of the most ancient of human housing.  They are found all over the world.  Sod homes on the mid west plains are a type of Dugout.

In rural South Jersey it was a method used as inexpensive home construction.

Construction consisted of a hole excavated and foundation walls built.  The walls were covered with roofing material.  The owner would live basically underground.  In good weather the homeowner would cook and go about their daily business on the "roof".  As more funds became available the rest of the house would be built on top of what would become the home's basement.

The Newtonville Dugout was occupied in the 1960's by a Reverend Warren. Rev. Warren passed away before the upper portion was built.
