Geocache Description:

The coordinates above are not for the cache location. They are for suggested parking to begin your quest. If you enjoy playing pinball you can travel about 2 miles SE of the suggested parking to Acton Bowladrome (N42 30.078 W71 25.189). They always have several pins in their lineup (and usually some of the newest titles).

This is a three part multi-cache. To find Part I you will need to learn a little bit about another one of our favorite hobbies (pinball) by solving the puzzle below. At part 1 you will find a micro-container (olive drab plastic waterproof matchcase). Inside the matchcase will be coordinates for Part 2 (micro-container smaller than the one found in part 1). Inside the Part 2 container you’ll find coordinates for the cache.

The cache is located along the Cobb Footpath in Littleton, MA. It has some diverse features such as vernal ponds, glacial boulders, numerous small hills, and many opportunities for wildlife sightings (such as turkeys, beavers, deer, …etc). It also has some old rusty farm equipment and fencing. The town plans to remove all of this eventually but for now please try to avoid locations marked with bright colored streamers.

Both micros are within 20’ of the main trails (i.e. little-to-no bushwhacking required). There are a couple of places where your GPSr may indicate that you're getting further from the target. Don't bushwhack! Stay on the main trail and it will eventually turn in the direction you need to go. Since parts 1 and 2 are micros we've included encrypted hints below.

The cache is an ammo can. It’s hidden in a traditional fashion about 70 ft. from the main trail but the area is pretty open so very little bushwhacking (if any) is necessary. Please take care to replace the micros and cache exactly as you found them.

The initial contents of the ammo can include 4 pinball drink coasters, 2 pinball keychains, a waterproof container with 3 pinballs inside, a whistle/compass/thermometer combo, 5 $1,000,000 bills, a micro-mini cooper, and several more small trading items. Inside the logbook are some prizes for the first few finders: An un-activated geocoin, a nano-magnet container, and two passes to the Charles Hayden Planetarium (expire 10/31/05).

Now for the puzzle...

All answers can be obtained from an extensive pinball database on the internet.

1) 'Humpty Dumpty' was introduced in 1947. It was the first machine with flippers. How many letters are in the full name of the person who invented the flipper?

2) Gottlieb's 'Egg Head', an Electro-Mechanical (EM) game, was introduced in 1961. How many total (Pop + Dead) bumpers are on Egg Head's playfield?

3) Mirco Games, Inc. introduced the first Solid State (SS) pinball machine (in 1975) called 'Spirit of 76', not to be confused with Gottlieb's game with the same name. How many Blue Stripes are there on the flag pictured on the backglass of Mirco Games, Inc's 'Spirit of 76'?

4) Bally's 'Centaur', introduced in 1981, is a classic 80's style pinball. It included a number of short phrases such as "bad move human" when a player made a wrong move. Centaur was designed by Jim Patla who said that 'Centaur' was inspired by a classic 1956 Bally machine. How many letters are in the name of the 1956 Bally machine that Jim was referring to (hyphens do not count as letters)?

5) Williams Electronics Mfg. Co. introduced 'Black Knight' (BK) in November of 1980. This was the first pinball machine to include multi-level (an upper and a lower) playfields. Over 13,000 units of the original BK were produced. BK introduced a feature where a player could press a button on either side and magnets would prevent the ball from draining via that outlane. How many letters are in the name of this magnetic feature (hyphens do not count as letters)?

6) Lord of the Rings (LOTR) was introduced by Stern Pinball, Inc. in 2003. Stern is one of the few remaining pinball manufacturers. They are producing an average of 3 new titles per year. How many Fellowship Lights are on the LOTR playfield?

7) In 1977 Bally introduced “Eight Ball” which had a production run of over 20,000 units! Eight Ball’s record production run remained intact until The Addams Family (Midway/Bally) came out in 1992. Addams Family sold about 40 more units than Eight Ball. How many flippers are on The Addams Family?

8) In the 1990’s Williams developed a number of fantastic pins. A few examples are Attack From Mars, Cirquis Voltaire, Fish Tales, Funhouse, Theatre of Magic, Twilight Zone, White Water, and many more! One of the most popular of all of the 90’s era games is Medieval Madness (MM). Collectors will pay nearly $10,000 for a MM in great condition! How many letters are in the full name of the person who developed the music and sound for MM?
