Many thanks to the
Dewdrops and Walkergeoff for postponing their event on our behalf. Check out the
Binfield Bank Holiday Cache Bash here.
Welcome
Hello people, and welcome to the first (and probably last)
Cache Hopper / Ratty & Son event cache collaboration! This bash marks a
few occasions;
- This is our first event cache listing
- We believe it to be the first in the Burghfield area
- The Cache Hoppers reached their 50 milestone (much to the dismay of
Ratty & Son
- Ratty & Son are off to Northern Ireland, where Geocaching isn't quite
as popular (boo hoo)
About Us
We've all been Geocaching for a few months now, since November 2004 in
fact. We met when the Hoppers emailed the Rats for some advice getting
started, only to find that they required the same. Since then the two
families have become great friends, often meeting up for a couple of
caches at the weekend! Why not check out our profiles using the buttons
above...
Critical Mass?
Critical, sub-critical, and super-critical
mass all refer to the chain reactions that occur in fissionable
material--a material in which nuclei can shatter or "fission" when
struck by a passing neutron. When this nuclear fuel is at critical mass,
each nucleus that fissions directly induces an average of one subsequent
fission. This situation leads to a steady chain reaction in the fuel:
the first fission causes a second fission, which causes a third fission,
and so on. Steady chain reactions of this sort are used in nuclear
reactors.
When the fuel is below critical mass, there aren't quite enough
nuclei around to keep the chain reactions proceeding steadily and each
chain gradually dies away. While such a sub-critical mass of fuel
continues to experience chain reactions, they aren't self-sustaining and
depend on natural radioactive decay to restart them.
When the fuel is above critical mass, there are more than enough
nuclei around to sustain the chain reactions. In fact, each chain
reaction grows exponentially in size with the passage of time. Since
each fission directly induces more than one subsequent fission, it takes
only a few generations of fissions before there are astronomical numbers
of nuclei fissioning in the fuel. Explosive chain reactions of this sort
occur in nuclear weapons.
So there, now you know!
Latest Info...
The Critical Mass Cache Bash is taking place on Sunday 1st
May 2005 at the Burghfield AWE Social Club. We plan to kick off at 1200
and will run through until about 1500.
Food will be available from 1300 and will consist of a
'basket style meal'. The caterers have assured us that although the menu
is somewhat limited, the portions are quite substantial. You won't even
need to cook your Sunday dinner!
Can we suggest (this is Liane's idea) that those
wishing to get the latest info add this listing to your watch list. That
way, you won't miss any important announcements!
The key points will be displayed in the table below, but a
more in depth write-up can be found at the
main cache webpage.
Our associated cache is ready and is called 'How to
Dismantle an Atomic Bomb'. It will go live early Sunday morning.
We hope to see you all at the event, but until then, HAPPY
CACHING!
