TheSnowdens: Time to archive this one. A new building was built here. The site is too muggly for a cache now.

Geocache Description:

A little Byzantine church in the shadow of the huge modern highway.

I have been hunting around for ages to find ANY information about this little church and come up with absolutely nothing. I've been watching the restoration process gradually evolving as I regularly drive past and it now seems to be finished.

I decided to plant the cache anyway and my prayers for information were answered as I met a lovely lady who lives nearby and comes every day to look after the little shrines at the front. One for Ayia (Saint) Marina who is the patron saint of debtors and one for the Holy Mother and Child. She was a very interesting and intelligent lady so I decided to tell her about the cache, she is most intrigued and promises not to tell. She didn't see exactly where I put it but won't be surprised if she sees strange people peering at their phones doing the cacher's shuffle.

She told me that the church was actually a monastery and is very old, from the Byzantine times and once had paintings inside like the ones up Troodos, but it was demolished in ancient times by bad guys who also killed all the monks, only the North wall was left so the weather soon destroyed the remaining artwork.

The low walls in the foreground are what is left of the monks rooms, aren't they tiny?

She says the monastery comes under the 'diocese' of a nunnery in the hills, and is usually locked, they are looking into having someone to keep the key to allow visitors to see it. The list on the front door is a wish list of all the things they still need to get for inside, her family paid for the shrines out front. There's a little slot for donations at the foot of the Virgin Mary if you feel like contributing.

My new friend told me lots of other stories too, but in case you meet her, I'll let you hear them first hand.

Cache is about the size of a film pot but twice as long, so we'll still call it a micro, log, dinky pencil and FTF pressie in there, not much else will fit unless it's quite skinny! It's NOT within the monastery enclosure but no climbing fences please.
