Geocache Description:

Fourth in a series of four Along the Milky Way. Virgo, a spring constellation, is the only female figure among the constellations of the zodiac and has been thought to represent a great array of deities since the beginning of recorded history. Among others, she has been identified with Babylonian fertility goddess Ishtar; Astraea, the Roman goddess of justice; Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest. Virgo is usually shown either holding an ear of wheat or carrying the scales of Libra, the adjoining constellation.

A bright white star, Spica is the ear of wheat Virgo is holding. The star is almost exactly 1st magnitude, although it does vary in brightness over a 5-year period. It is 220 light years away and more than 2,000 times as luminous as the Sun. The constellation can be found in the Spring in the southern sky from late March to early June.

Scattered throughout Virgo and Coma Berenices (KOH-mah bear-eh-NEE-seez), just north of this Springtime constellation, are more than 13,000 galaxies known as the Virgo Cluster. This area of the night sky is truly what astronomers believe to be the “downtown” of the universe – the point where the “Big Bang” originated. An eight inch telescope or larger will show a few of the brighter galaxies such as M84, M86, M87 and M104.

This is a four stage multi-cache – the final being a small Rubbermaid container that only has a log book and pen inside. Small objects may be left behind. Some of the waypoints may be muddy after a rain and some bush whacking may be needed if you take the wrong approach.

Start your journey by parking on Puetz Road near the bike trail. Trail can be wet and muddy during wet periods.
