Geocache Description:

We're known for our dislike of the "urban microcache", and yes, we actually placed a microcache ourselves. But there's a twist...

The hill behind the cache was once the site of the thriving community of Deadwater, a stop on the Somerset Railroad linking Oakland and (ultimately) Mt Kineo, Maine. (In fact, the road to the cache is the former rail bed, and continues on the left to Lake Moxie and on the right to Blanchard.) Deadwater at one time had a school, post office, general store, sawmill, and logging camps (one of Holman Day's movies was filmed here). A good book on the railroad was "The Old Somerset Railroad" by Walter M. Macdougall. (visit link) The rail line above Bingham - which included Deadwater - was discontinued in 1933.

The cache container is the typical plastic film can, but is well camouflaged. Note: You MUST sign the log to claim this cache. We will occasionally review log entries against online entries and delete any logs that aren't confirmed.

Congrats to Pete490, SheepLady and DubleTruble for the FTF!
