Forte da Meia Praia
[Lagos]
Forte
da segunda metade do séc. XVII, construído por ordem
de D. Nuno da Câmara, Conde de Pontével, enquanto
Governador do Algarve. Fica isolado, no cimo de um pequeno monte,
no extenso areal da Meia Praia e junto à orla
marítima.
Arquitectura
militar, maneirista, tipologicamente similar ao Forte da Ponta da
Bandeira, mas mais simples, uma vez que não foi alvo de
recuperações. Integrado no plano de defesa da
baía de Lagos, com a sua artilharia em conjunto com as
canhoeiras de Lagos e das 6 baterias ao longo da baía,
garantia a cobertura e reforço na defesa da embocadura da
ribeira de Bensafrim e praias adjacentes.
O
terramoto de 1755 causou desmoronamentos em diversas zonas do
forte, tendo servido como Posto da Guarda-Fiscal até entrar
em decadência.
O
forte está abandonado e permite que se entre no seu
interior. No terraço, a vista sobre a baia e a Praia de S.
Roque (chamada meia-praia) é soberba.
O
forte, este pedaço indelével da nossa
história, é um dos exemplos da incúria e do
pouco respeito que as entidades oficiais reservam ao nosso
património colectivo! Este edifício está
degradado, vandalizado e apesar de ser propriedade pública,
num local com manifesto interesse turístico, está
votado ao abandono.
Fort of the second half of the 17th century, built by order of D.
Nuno da Câmara, Count of Pontével, while Governor of
Algarve. It is isolated, in the top of a small hill, in the
extensive beach of Meia Praia and near the sea front.
Military
architecture, mannerist, structure similar to the Fort of Pau da
Bandeira, but more simple, since it was not subject to
recuperations. Integrated in the defense plan of Lagos bay, with
its artillery together with the cannons of Lakgos and the 6
batteries along the bay, were guaranteeing the covering and
reinforcement in the defense of the estuary of the Bensafrim
riverside and adjacent beaches.
The
earthquake of 1755 caused collapses in several zones of the fort,
having been subsequently a Fiscal Police Post, until entering in
decadence.
The
fort is abandoned and allows visitors to enter its interior. In the
terrace, the sight over the bay and the Beach of S. Roque (called
meia-praia) is magnificent.
The
fort, this indelible piece of our history, is one of the examples
of the carelessness and disrespect that the official entities
reserve to our collective patrimony! This building is degraded,
vandalized and in spite of being a public property, in a place with
obvious tourist interest, is passed to the
abandonment.
