Geocache Description:

Third in a series of four Along the Milky Way, Scorpius is a summer constellation. According to legend, the constellation Scorpius was placed in the sky in honor on the tiny scorpion that stung and killed the boastful hunter Orion.

With its curving body, its claws, and its whip like tail, Scorpius is one of those special few constellations that actually look like the thing they were named for. It has a bright red star in the center called Antares (meaning – rival of Mars because of its reddish color), a red super giant that is one of the few visible stars that has a reasonable probability of turning into a supernova in the next million years.

The stars that make up the north and south claws have two of my favorite names for stars. "Zubenelgenubi" (zoo-BEN-al-je-NEW-bee) derives from an Arabic phrase meaning the "Scorpion's southern claw," and “Zubeneschamali” (zoo-BEN-ess-sha-MAH-lee) meaning “Scorpion’s northern claw”.

The best time to view this constellation is in the summer months looking towards the south. In July Antares is almost due south around 9:00pm.

This is a three stage multi-cache – the final being a small camo wrapped peanut butter jar that only has a log book and pencil inside. BYOP just in case. Small objects may be left behind.
