Geocache Description:

volks-man and wife's 5th traditional cache. -NOTE- THE NATURE TRAIL USED TO BE LISTED AS BEING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC YEAR-ROUND EVEN WHEN THE MUSEUM WAS CLOSED FOR THE WINTER.... THE FURNACETOWN WEBSITE IS CURRENTLY UNCLEAR ON THIS SUBJECT. PLEASE REFER TO AND OBEY ANY POSTED INFORMATION THAT MAY BE AT THE GATES DURING THE OFF SEASON.

NOTE: THERE IS A FOUR DOLLAR FEE TO ENTER THIS AREA. nassawongo used to be the place to be if you were in the pig-iron buisness. in the 1800s ore was mined very near the surface in the cypress swamps of the area. a huge furnace was built to smelt the ore. the furnace wich still stands today was later converted to a blast furnace to achieve even higher temps during the smelting process (blast tubes essential turbocharge the furnace). furnacetown is neat-o and a very educational place. there are several restored buildings on site, lots of period correct tools and equipment, and a small museum. last but not least is the nature trail. there should be no bush-whacking if you follow the correct trail. although the cache site is currently dry it may be soft just after heavy rains. please leave the area EXACTLY as you find it. be sure to be stealthy in the presence of spies! have fun and good luck!
