Viele Besucher von Köln sind verständlicherweise überwältigt von dem spektakulären Anblick des Kölner Doms, aber gerade deswegen übersehen sie oft, daß es ganz in der Nähe und quasi im Schatten des Doms noch ein wichtiges Stück Geschichte zu sehen gibt.
Dieses geht sogar zurück auf die Gründung der Stadt Köln. Im Jahre 50 nach Christus veranlaßte Agrippina die Jüngere, Frau des Kaisers Claudius, die hier an den Ufern des Rheins geboren war, die Erhebung ihre Heimatortes zu dem Status einer colonia -- einer Stadt unter Römischem Gesetz. So wurde es Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensis (eine "Kolonie des Claudius und der Altar der Agrippina"), oder Colonia Agrippina, "die Kolonie der Agrippina" genannt. Daher stammt auch der heutige Name der Stadt: Köln.
An den obigen Koordinaten findet ihr das abgebildete Portal. Es ist eine Rekonstruktion eines der Seitenportale des Römischen Nordtores, gebaut auf den noch sichtbaren Überresten des alten Römischen Stadttores und der alten Römischen Stadtmauer.
Um diesen Cache zu loggen, macht bitte ein Foto von euch, auf dem das Portal im Hintergrund sichtbar ist, und ladet es mit Eurem Log hoch. Aus Datenschutzgründen ist es nicht erforderlich, Euer Gesicht zu zeigen, wenn Ihr dies nicht möchtet. Es ist nicht notwendig, mir ein Foto separat zu schicken.
Um mir die Kontrolle eurer Logs zu erleichtern, posted bitte nicht, wenn Ihr nicht gleichzeitig auch Euer Foto hochladen könnt!

Many visitors to Cologne are understandably awed by the spectacular Cologne Cathedral, but because of the sheer impressiveness of that building they often overlook this significant bit of history standing in the cathedral's shadow.
This piece of history dates back to the origins of the city of Cologne. In 50 AD, Agrippina the Younger, wife of the Emperor Claudius, who was born here on the banks of the Rhine, asked for her home village to be elevated to the status of a colonia -- a city under Roman law. It was called Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensis (a "colony of Claudius and the altar of Agrippina"), or Colonia Agrippina, "the Colony of Agrippina". It is from this name that "Cologne" was taken.
At the posted coordinates stands the gateway depicted above. It is a reconstruction of one of the side portals of the Roman North Gate built upon the visibly preserved remains of the old Roman city gate and walls.
