Geocache Description:

Genes, Geese and Green

This cache takes you on a whirlwind tour of the West Campus of the University of the Witwatersrand, showcasing some fantastic architecture, landscaping, and artwork. A detailed map of the grounds can be found here.

Waypoint 1

The first waypoint contains co-ordinates of a second waypoint, where you must complete a puzzle to reveal the co-ordinates of the final cache.

The clue waypoint consists of a small screwtop bottle containing a set of co-ordinates. Please do not remove these co-ordinates from the container! Remember to take a pen and notebook with you to write these down. Keep an eye out for student muggles!

You will find yourself near the Wits Origins Centre, a world-class museum that provides a unique journey through time, where visitors can explore the rich, diverse and mysterious origins of humankind. Visiting hours, entrance fees and booking information can be found here.

Waypoint 2

At the co-ordinates found in the first clue waypoint, you will find a significant structure. Write down the word which appears on the side of this building, and convert the letters of the word to numbers using a = 1, b = 2, c = 3 etc.

Then, use the numbers you just obtained (and a bit of mathematics!) to calculate the missing digits in the following co-ordinates which will lead you to the final cache:

S 26° 11. ABC’
E 028° 0X. YZ6’

Where:
A = 1st letter of the word / 10
B = 5th letter of the word – 10
C = 6th letter of the word – 19
X = 2nd letter of the word – 14
Y = 3rd letter of the word – 19
Z = 4th letter of the word.

Final Cache

The cache is hidden in a secluded spot, in the tranquil gardens of the Gavin Reilly Green. There is a beautiful lake nearby, which is home to a large number of ducks and geese, as well as a few fish. On the shady banks of the water you will find several comfy spots to rest your legs and have a break!

IMPORTANT: You can get access to the campus via Empire Road or Enoch Sontonga Drive. If asked, tell security you heading to the Origins Centre. Parking on campus is pretty full during the week, but is not too bad on afternoons and weekends.
