INFO:AIANI:Headvillage built in covered with trees area, 21km south of Kozane. North-east of the village which was called Calliani till 1926 (probably it came from the name of Colli Aiane), systematical excavations are made since 1983, by the 17th Prehistorical and Classic`s Antiquity Supervision, which are bringing to light an exceptionaly significant center and promise to give elements of vital importance for the Up Macedonia`s meditation of history. An the village, built on a hill in the area of Megali Rachi, in a distance of 1,5km from the present village, it was verified that there was continuous settlement from the end of the Coper Age and the Early Iron Age till the Hysteroellenistic Times. The city which was situated here was as it seems the ancient Aiane. It was the capital of the kingdom of Elemea which according to the legent took its name by Aianos, son of Elemos who was the head of the Elemeans` race. Mycenean things found, among which there is a vat with an inscription on, writen in linear B, prove that this village had close relationships with the centers of South Greece almost from the 13th and 12th BC century, while the tomb`s enclosures and the fragments of men, women and lions statues and the marble tombs` inscriptions, found in the Achaic cemetery, certify the burial customs` sameness of the Elemian Macedonians with these ones of the other Greeks. A long time before Up Macedonia`s conquest by Philip the second, in the 5th BC century, Aiane was already a developed civic center with monumental architecture. It was the base of a Royal House which had frequently opposed and other times been connected with the Argeades of Down Macedonia by intermarrieges. The city was ruined in the first BC century. The place was abandoned and the city was probably built in the area of the present Paleocastro of Caissaria, in a distance of 2km, where nowadays there are Roman and Byzantine ruins, among which there are two dedicatory steps of the public of the Elemeans. Aiane existed even in the Byzantine Times and both with Serbia were one of the area`s centers as it is proved by the Byzantine churches built there.
