This cache has been archived.

OzGuff: With the recent change in policy that now bans caches in experimental forests I am slowly retrieving all of mine in Bent Creek. Thanks to all who visited!

Geocache Description:

The Alchemist Series

DO NOT TAKE ANY OF THE PENNIES!!! DO NOT ADD ANY PENNIES!!!

The Alchemist Series contains a total of fifteen caches: eight in Tier One, four in Tier Two, two in Tier Three, and one in Tier Four. The eight caches in Tier One are all traditional, so the listed coordinates are accurate. But in order to find any of the caches in the three higher tiers you must first find two caches in a lower tier. (The graphic above shows how the series fits together.) Each cache -- except for Gold (and Copper) -- contains a three digit number written on the inside of the front cover of the logbook; that number will be needed to calculate either the latitude or longitude of a higher tier cache.

Copper's information will get you the Brass longitude. (Zinc's information will get you the Brass latitude.) Please do not share this information with other cachers; let them complete the series on their own. This series will take you on a criss-cross journey through western North Carolina. This is not a race!

You are looking for a small Lock&Lock container hidden along the Side Hill trail in Bent Creek. (If you don't already have one I recommend you print off a copy of the Bent Creek Trail Map.) The cache is hidden in an obvious hiding spot just up the slope. Park your vehicle at N 35° 29.119 W 82° 38.214, and follow a faint trail down to the main trail. When you reach the gravel road, turn right. Unfortunately, there are no trade items in this cache, but it can fit a few items. All that you will find inside are a few pennies.

DO NOT TAKE ANY OF THE PENNIES!!! DO NOT ADD ANY PENNIES!!! The pennies are required to calculate the three digit number needed to find the Brass cache. Find the three oldest pennies. Take the last digit from each year on the three pennies and make the largest three digit number you can divisible by 7. Record this number somewhere! DO NOT TAKE ANY OF THE PENNIES!!! DO NOT ADD ANY PENNIES!!! Enjoy The Alchemist Series!

The inspiration for this series came from MarcB -- a cacher in the United Kingdom who graciously allowed me to steal the idea. Check out any of the caches in his Alchemy Quest series.
