This is a family* friendly multi stage cache that will take you
on a walking tour through Huntington village. There is a red
herring and a fast forward, so beware! You will benefit by having a
smart phone with web access or a friend with web access on the
other end of the phone. Bring your own pen.
* Better suited to participating teens than toddlers and
tweenies!
This is a somewhat challenging find, in four stages, for newbie
geocachers: Your quest is to find the secret sign of The First
Degree geocacher.
Stage #1: A nano @40°52'3.95" N 73°25'33.15" W with the
co-ordinates to Stage #2.
Conklin House: The Conklins are among the earliest settlers of
Huntington.
David
Conklin built this Farmhouse around 1750. His father Thomas
signed Huntington’s own Declaration of Independence, the town's
Articles of Association. Being patriots, David fled when the
British occupied Huntington following their victory in the Battle
of Long Island. David's wife Sybil, who remained behind, struggled
to deal with the occupying army. It is said that when the British
troops ransacked the house and ordered her to give them her gold
wedding band, she took the ring off and put it in her mouth,
refusing to part with it. When a soldier was about to hit her an
officer spoke up, ordering him to “Leave the plucky little lady
alone.”
Stage #2: An historic sign at Benchmark
KU0436 hides the co-ordinates to Stage #3. This benchmark is
described as being in the South wall of the Fire Department
Building, 5.5 feet West of the South East corner, and 3.7 feet
above the sidewalk. A standard disk, stamped 55.837 Q 39 1932 and
set vertically.
Stage #3: A sign at this Patriot's House hides
co-ordinates to Stage #4. This Patriot was a physician and an
officer in the revolution and a member of the Long Island Spy Ring
between Brooklyn and Setauket. He was known for the patriotic
saying "I am determined to live and die free." He is buried in the
Old Huntington Cemetery on Main St., site of an earlier cache in
this series:
GC1XY64
Stage #4: Take a load off outside this venerable house of
learning -- in fact, take the whole bench to yourself. You're
looking for a magnetic micro cache. Bring your own pen to sign the
log then claim your find. Geocoins won't fit -- but Travel Bugs
without attachments may be traded here. You're encouraged, but not
obliged, to upload a photograph of yourself in the general area of
this cache showing off, as discretely as possible, the secret
sign of The First Degree geocacher -- without obviously giving
it away -- the instruction for which is contained in the cache.
FTF prize is a gold Liberty Dollar (not much else fits this
micro cache container, sorry)!
Congratulations on obtaining your First Degree in
the somewhat mysterious, slightly technical, secret society of
geocachers. Your ordeal now is to learn the secret sign of The
Second Degree geocacher
This is number Three in a special series of geocaches in
Huntington ...
- The Neophyte:
GC1Y8D0 (a traditional cache)
- The Entered Apprentice:
GC1XY64 (a multi stage cache)
- The First Degree: GC1Y8TK (this cache)
Graduate to higher degrees of this order by uncovering other
caches in this series -- coming soon to a neighbourhood near you in
Huntington!

September 26 by AtWitt'sEnd (319 found) The family and I took a nice walk through the east end of the village on a Saturday afternoon with great weather. We were trying for both of the multis in the series, but ran out of time before we could finish the Plucky Lady , but we did finish the other one. We think we caught the herring, but will have to wait and see if we're right...
[view this log] | September 20 by schaefersearchers (1 found) This was our very first geocaching experience. Although we were stumped for a bit, we ended up figuring it all out and having a blast!
[view this log] | September 18 by Bayonets4u (4841 found) First of six caches found today. Found Parts 1 and 2 without any problem but was stuck without internet access. When I read the cache I had an idea where to look for the final. I gave that a try and it worked. Signed the log, took nothing and left nothing. Thanks for the historic cache. Bayonets4u
[view this log] | September 10 by Sakiman (4783 found) Another shared FTF with mmacgown . We thought we were done for the night when we saw this cache was published. We had actually driven about .2 mile North of it on our way home . So, we were back in the car and on our way to Huntington. Found all parts easily enough after hitting a minor roadblock with the "red herring". We finally deduced where we might be able to "fast forward" ourselves and the cache was in hand some minutes after that. We signed in, took the obligatory FTF pictures and then proclaimed it the end of the night. Luckily, there weren't any other newly published caches when we made it home this time. (Yep... just made sure again.. We're home for the night ). Signed in and took the TB and FTF dollar. TFTC!! TFTFTF opportunity!!

| September 10 by mmacgown (5581 found) Found it! Co-FTF with Sakiman and last of 3 for the evening's caching! As I was logging the first one found, I got the notification and said to Sakiman, Let's go. It just so happens we had just passed this area on our way home. So we loaded the information and headed out. We found parts 1 & 2, but had trouble figuring out what to do next. We did try to do the PAF thing, but had trouble with that. So, acting on a hunch, we got lucky! Found it in the 2nd spot we looked! Grabbed the TB tag and signed in. Thanks for another fun multi-cache/puzzle cache hunt!
