This pretty twelfth century church stands on a hill above the
Cuckmere Valley giving stunning views of the South Downs. It has
laid claim to being the smallest church in the country (it is only
16 feet square and seats 20 people) but in reality it is just part
of the chancel of a much larger church whose remains can be traced
in the churchyard.
Parking is available in a small free car park at N 50° 48.544 E 000° 09.363 just outside
Alfriston. If approaching from the north drive into the village
and turn right at the market cross. (If the car park's full
there's a Pay & Display on the other side of the road.)
The cache is half a mile from the car park. Click here for a map. Walk into the village
and turn left after the United Reformed Church to the Tye
(village green). Here you'll see the beautiful St Andrews Church known as the "Cathedral of
the South Downs" and the Old Clergy House, the first property
acquired by the National Trust. From the Tye take the footpath
over the White Bridge and up the hill past Great Meadow Barn
(formerly Plonk Barn). Lullington Church is signposted.
Alternatively if you'd rather "cache & dash" you can park
just off the road near the Rectory but you'll miss a lovely walk!
The actor Dirk Bogarde lived at the Rectory as a child and
describes the church in detail in his excellent autobiography "A
Postillion Struck by Lightning".
The cache is a 2.4 litre tupperware box and was last restocked
on 28 December 2007. Don't feel obliged to take anything but please
leave something of similar value if you do. All our trade items are
new and cost around £1 each.
Services are held in Lullington Church between April and
September every third Sunday of the month at 3pm so please try to
avoid these times!
This cache is being maintained by Jane's Dad who lives in
Alfriston.
