Oslo har hatt tre hovedtorg oppgjennom historien:
- Oslo torg i Gamlebyen (ca. 1100 - ca. 1640)
- Christiania gamle torg (ca. 1640 - 1736)
- Stortorget (1736 - i dag)

På torget står en statue av kong Christian IV, der kongen peker med høyre hånd: «Her skal byen ligge!». Statuen er utført av billedhuggeren C.L. Jacobsen, støpt i bronse med sokkel hugget i granitt fra Grefsen. Statuen ble avduket i 1880. I avisene og under avdukingen var det kritikk mot at en «dansk konge» fikk sin statue satt opp i byen.
17. mai 1829 kom det til tumulter mellom militære avdelinger og en større folkemengde i det som senere er kjent som "Torgslaget". Mer informasjon finnes her: Torgslaget
Torget er Oslos blomstertorg. Når veiavstander til Oslo vises på veiskilt, er avstanden målt til Stortorget.

This cache is part of a geocaching game in Oslo, called Geopol. The cache series shows all streets in the norwegian version of the Monopoly game, with emphasis on historic places and how our city has changed over the years. Stortorvet is located north of the Karl Johan main street. It's the old market place in Oslo, and today the square is used as a flower market. The cache is located right outside of the Oslo Domkirke (Cathedral). In the middle of the square, there is a statute of the danish-norwegian king Christian IV, who "founded" the new city after the great fire in 1642. The city was named Christiania, and the design with right-angled streets is known as the "Kvadraturen". Several caches in the Geopol series shows this part of the old Oslo; Nedre Slottsgate; Øvre Slottsgate; Prinsensgate; Kongens gate.
