That's what it said, the text message I sent to my wife at 4:37 pm on June 30, 2014, as owlandpussycat and I were caught squarely in a hike and FTF quest gone wrong. (OK, the post-FTF went wrong.) Lucky for us, she got the message, got word to first responders, and we were before too long whisked out of there. Thank you, kare bear--along with the CalFire team, you really saved our bacon!

Going through that kind of experience is like getting bitten by an exotic snake. Assuming you survive, you might just want to look at it again, from a safe distance or behind the glass. That's a part of what this event is about.

We'll meet at the trailhead (additional waypoint provided) between 6:45 and 7:00, and head out for the hike at 7:15. Once we arrive at the posted coordinates, the event will commence, with an event meal (of Life Savers, what else?) to be provided. Please pack additional food you will want along the way. It's over 3 miles just to get to the spot, and attendees will likely undertake different activities after the event (hike straight back, go out a little more, do one or another loop, etc.). Pack a lot of water too--I'm bringing 100 ounces. Trekking pole(s). It could be 20-30 degrees cooler than the temperatures we faced (below), so pay attention to the weather--and to this page--as the event approaches. Also, I have attached information about the hike from the website of the non-profit Tuleyome--see related web page.

Being a numbers guy, I wrote down the hourly temperatures that last day of June in nearby Pope Valley:
12a 69
1a 66
2a 66
3a 65
4a 64
5a 62
6a 60
7a 63
8a 68
9a 75
10a 81
11a 86
12p 94
1p 99
2p 104
3p 106
4p 105
5p 104
6p 101
7p 100
8p 94
9p 88
10p 81
11p 79

Thankfully, we can expect a lot cooler in mid-November!

This is a serious hike, and we'll have a good time. Hope to see you there!
