A hoodoo (also tent rock, fairy chimney, earth pyramid) is a tall
thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of an arid
drainage basin or badland. Hoodoos are composed of soft sedimentary
rock and are topped by a piece of harder, less easily-eroded stone
that protects the column from the elements. They are mainly located
in the desert in dry, hot areas. In common usage, the difference
between hoodoos and pinnacles or spires is that hoodoos have a
variable thickness often described as having a "totem pole-shaped
body." A spire, on the other hand, has a smoother profile or
uniform thickness that tapers from the ground upward. (Geology
purists do note that only a tall formation should be called a
hoodoo; any other shape is called a 'hoodoo rock'.) Hoodoos range
in size from that of an average human to heights exceeding a
10-story building. Hoodoo shapes are affected by the erosional
patterns of alternating hard and softer rock layers. Minerals
deposited within different rock types cause hoodoos to have
different colors throughout their height..
You will be hiking threw Indian Bluffs which hides a unique
geological formation well known as Chimney Rock. Climbers have used
it for climbing for a very long time. It is well secluded from the
world and quick a hike to visit it. As you walk along you will see
some bluffs in the area. I would recommend it but there is quite a
view on a clear night from the top of the buffs. You can get a
great peek at the stars.
To log a "find" on this Earthcache you must accomplish the
following requirements:
-Make your way down to Chimney Rock at the posted cords.

Send an e-mail container the answers to the following
questions.
-Estimate the total height of Chimney Rock.
-What type of rock makes up Chimney Rock?
-How was the rock formation formed?
-The elevation of the base of the Hoodoo. Any "found" logs not
meeting these will be deleted.
Enjoy your hike in Indian Bluffs and make sure you bring plenty of
water it is quite a hike. It is not required to climb Chimney Rock.
