The cache is located
in one of the former Village Settlements in the
Riverland.
In the late 1800s 11 Village
Settlements were established along the River Murray. They
were named: New Era, Gillen, Ramco, Waikerie, Holder,
Kingston, Moorook, New Residence, Pyap, Lyrup and Murtho. The
Bill enabling this was hotly debated in Parliament. Formerly
land could only be granted to individuals, who then benefited
from their own effort and hard work. The Act relating to
Village Settlements meant that groups of 20 or more people
could form an Association to establish a Village Settlement.
This concept favoured those, who believed in socialism and
sharing the fruits of their labour, however there was
provison in the Act for each settlement to decide for itself
whether it would be run along communal or individual lines.
Each village was managed by a Board elected by the villagers
and there was an obligation on the settlers to improve the
land within a given timeline. At this time many South
Australian farmers were considering leaving the Colony and
emigrating to Paraguay. The Government hoped that these
skilled famers, who had some savings or owned plant, would
now, with some Government support, be able to settle in these
communal villages. In actual fact many of the people, who
eventually joined the Village Settlements were actually
impoverished, unemployed people often with little or no
farming background. In addition many of the villages were
plagued by arguments over how they were to be run. A recipe
for failure. Whilst all of the settlement names still exist
in the Riverland, it is only Lyrup that is still officially a
"Village".
