Cache close to lovely lake
This cache replaces the original ‘Hidden Lake v.2’ that was recently vandalised. In replacing it we have also moved its location, so if you like you can have another go and claim an extra cache. It is in a small plastic snap-lid box. (As a matter of interest v.2 replaced an earlier 'The Hidden Lake' cache that was also vandalised: v.3 is well away from the usual muggles and we are hoping that it will have a long life!)
At the edge of Wootton Bassett, near Swindon, is a little- known park called ‘Jubilee Lake’. There is a free carpark, which you can find as follows. From Junction 16 on the M4 go westwards on the A3102 in the direction of Wootton Bassett. At the second roundabout, do not turn left to Wootton Bassett, but instead go straight on along the B4042 Malmesbury road. A few hundred yards on the left is the entrance to the free car park opposite a sign reading ‘Jubilee Lake’.
From here you can take either of the paths into the park. The left-hand path goes down through a wood to the lake. The upper path goes alongside an excellent children's play park will a huge variety of things to do. There are also some really good toilets. The path then drops down to the lake, the home of some very noisy ducks.
At the very far end of the lake (on the right-hand side) go up the slope and look for a track that goes to the left through the trees. This track can get a little slippery after heavy rain, and is only suitable for the hardiest of buggy-pushers. The cache is hidden up a slope to the right of the track. Please make sure that you snap the lid back on tightly and cover it with some little bits of wood.
Because of the heavy tree cover your GPS may not give a very accurate reading. Just before you reach the cache you will pass through an area with very little tree cover - a place where your GPS will start to give better results.
After finding the cache you can if you like carry on along the path and look for a little track to the right - this will take you up to the top, from where you can return to your car by walking alongside the edge of a fine sports field.
If you have the time you might want to visit nearby Wootton Bassett, a pleasant little town with a good range of small shops, as well as a couple of supermarkets. You can park behind Sainsburys.
