Geocache Description:

This cache celebrates the newest boardwalk built by a great team of volunteers in Hanlon Creek last fall and takes you to one of my favourite corners in the entire conservation area. It’s hard to believe how black, wet and muddy this trail used to be, but walk along it today and it’s a solid boardwalk winding through the cedar swamp – all built in one day! You cross Hanlon Creek itself a short distance along from the east end.

You can get to this cache either from the southeast or from further north. In the first case, enter the conservation area at the trail off Clairfields Dr. W., between Keys Cresc. and Jean Anderson Cresc; turn right and keep following the trails north to the northwest corner of the large open meadow. The turn west to the boardwalk is about 70 steps south of the farthest northwest corner of the meadow. I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU NOT TO TRY AND BUSHWACK IT TO THIS ONE – FOLLOW THE TRAILS! – unless you want to get wet, dirty and lost!

From the north follow directions from the Terraview Cresc. entrance to the Big Beech Stub ( and continue south until you come to the northwest corner of the large meadow. From the point where you emerge from the woods it’s about 70 steps straight ahead and then turn right to find the east end of the boardwalk.

I’ve actually placed the cache about 200 steps beyond the southwest end of the boardwalk. This will take you to a trail junction where you take the right fork, heading approximately SW, then on into a grove of huge old hemlocks, a little patch of pretty old forest in Guelph. The cache is in a 15’ tall hemlock stump about 30 feet west of the trail. Just a few feet off the trail is one of the largest Black Cherry trees I’ve ever seen, nearly 20” in diameter. Most of these are cut for lumber long before they get this big! It’s bark is said to look like large burnt cornflakes.

It’s a letterbox cache as well as having room for small trade items. Don’t trade for the rubber stamp or inkpad! Hope you enjoy this corner of the forest.
