Geocache Description:

Parking Coordinates for this cache are N39° 45.146 W074° 27.912. Facing the area where the tower used to be, the trail is on the left, well protected by laurel bushes. As the name implies Bear Swamp Hill, you might want to have good hiking shoes or boots to access this site.

Bear Swamp Hill was the site of a Forest Fire Tower located in Penn State Forest. On January 16, 1971 an F-105 Thunderchief took off from McGuire Air Force Base on what was intended to be a routine bombing run at Warren Grove. The pilot a flight commander with the Air National Guards 141st Tactical Squadron lost his life when he crashed into the tower around 11:35am. The Tower and observation platform were completely destroyed along with an estimated 988 trees. The landing gear ended up around .29 miles from where the tower used to be. I remember my Dad taking us to the site after the military cleaned up and we found parts of the plane, electric motors, glass and aluminum. To this day you can still find pieces of aluminum if you wander off the trail. A very reliable source told me somewhere in a tree near this site you can still find a part of the plane embedded in a tree, I have yet to find this, but it would be a bonus if anyone did.

I would like give a special thanks to Teegate for information listed in the Description.
