Take a little trip back in time to the town of Tip Top,
located just southeast of this cache!
Tip Top was a small community, but it still has its place in LBL
history. It and its neighbor, Tobaccoport, were trading spots along
the Cumberland River during their heyday. It was originally settled
by the Dennis, Miles, Hester, Parker, Robinson, Lancaster, Brandon,
and Scarborough families, with many members of those families
buried in nearby cemeteries. Tobaccoport still exists but, sadly,
Tip Top does not.
The actual center of town was located at N36 32.339 W087 53.798;
there was a school, a church, and a post office. The school burned
in 1940 and students finished the school year in the millhouse.
Right down the road is Gatlin Point and Brandon Springs. The
commerce of the area was farming, making cross-ties, and saw
milling.
In the vicinity of the cache you'll find the remnants of an old
bridge and the foundation of a good-sized building, probably one of
the churches of the area. Please look around and try to imagine
what the town once looked like. I'm still looking for photos and
will post any I find.
You are looking for a medium-sized Lock&Lock box. The box is
not where you would expect it to be. Original contents of the box
are: pencil and log book; golf ball; signature items (book and
boat); smiley face puzzle; Geo.Joe spirit stone; magic 8 ball;
micro car; metrogirl; tiger zcard; UFO license; personal fan; Blue
Fox Strobe Spinner; lewy rock; American flag; Mexican coin. Oh, and
did I forget to mention Chick the Cow TB, Ali Baba Wishbone TB, and
Lockjaw 2 TB?!?!?
Park at N36 32.863 W087 53.942 (remember, no driving or
parking on unnumbered roads in LBL - don't ask me for the $500 to
pay the fine when you get caught!). Just walk down the old
roadbed and follow it to the left. Be careful in the rainy season -
this area doesn't flood but can be VERY soggy, and you'll want to
use plenty of insect repellant during mosquito months, and
definitely watch for snakes. This is not a hard find, but
kids will need some help. And please conceal the cache as well or
better than you found it!
Good luck and happy caching!
