Lovers of
Paris have lavished it with gifts. One of those gifts, a scale
version of the Statue of Liberty, gazes out over the river from the
Pont de Grenelle. It is much smaller than the New York original (a
gift from France to United States in 1886), yet at 11,5 meters
high, it is the city´s tallest statue. An American named Dr. Evans,
Napoleon III´s dental surgeon, proposed that the American community
in France donate this monument for the 1889 World´s
Fair..
This statue, which was inaugurated
at its site on 15 November 1889 (three years after its
counterpart), was sculpted by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. Its base
carries a commemorative plate, and the booklet it holds in its left
hand carries the inscription IV Juillet 1776 = XIV Juillet 1789,
recognizing the American Independence Day and Bastille Day,
respectively.
Like all newcomers, this lovely lady had some difficulty getting
oriented. Initially, she turned her back on the United States,
which allowed the President Carnot to unveil the work from the
shore rather than on a boat in the Seine. In 1937, she was rotated
to face the American continent.
