Geocache Description:

An easy walk with a 'big walk' feel.

This cache is hidden beside a quiet lane which runs along the top of one of our local hills - Stonewall Hill - and is one of our favourite walks on a summer’s evening. The landscape here is typical of this part of the Welsh Borders. It is an easy, fairly level, walk along a lane which sees very little traffic but offers a wonderful sense of isolation and has the most amazing far-reaching views. It is like climbing a mountain but with none of the hard work! As the whole route is along a metalled road with nice wide verges it is ideal for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Although it is possible to park beside the cache, or at various places along the lane, we recommend parking at N 52 19.578 W 003 00.612, as we feel this gives the best ‘feel’ to the walk. (Please don’t block any farm gateways). From here it is approximately 1.9km to the cache and on a clear day the views are breathtaking, with hills rolling away as far as the eye can see. Walking towards the cache you can see Clee Hill, near Ludlow, and the Malvern Hills to the east, and the hills of Radnor Forest to the west. On reaching the cache an incredible vista opens out with views extending southwards over the valley of the River Lugg towards Hereford, and as far as the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. Returning towards the car you are rewarded with views to the north, over the valley of the River Teme to the Longmynd, the Shropshire Hills and the Wrekin.

Also, whilst in the area, there are a couple of interesting places that might be worth a visit:-
Close to the suggested parking spot is the Spaceguard Centre (www.spaceguard.com), an observatory which studies the threat posed to Earth by collisions with asteroids and comets, and in nearby Presteigne is the Judges Lodging (www.judgeslodging.org.uk), an award winning museum which recreates the ‘upstairs, downstairs’ life of the Victorian judges who used to preside at the county court. Check out their websites for opening times.
There are plenty of cafes and pubs offering refreshments in both Knighton and Presteigne.
