Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the end of the old Freshwater, Yarmouth, Newport Railway line.

Initially constructed in 1886 – 1888, it started full passenger use in May 1889.
It was never the most successful line and operated in bankruptcy for many years.
The final axe fell, along with many other rail lines, with the last train running on 20 Sept 1953.
(visit link)

The western end of the line has been retained for public use. It is currently possible to walk, cycle or ride from here to Thorley Road in Yarmouth, via Yarmouth Station
All of the bridleway/ cycle path is within an AONB and much of it is beside the Yar estuary, a haven for birds and other wildlife and parts designated as an SSSI, Special Protection Area and a Special Area of Conservation!

The cache is a 2 litre tuperware tub, located just short of the site of the old Freshwater station. Remnants of the original platform can still be found in the back of the Honour and Jefferies Garden Centre, the Coop is now standing on the station house and the “End of the Line Café” (extended in 2008 and well worth a visit) occupies the site of the Goods yard(N50 40.892 W001 30.857).

If you take some bread, there are normally ducks around the cache site that enjoy a treat. Alternatively the Causeway, 1/4mile north also has a hungry bird population too.
