Sycamore Cycling Stash Series # 1: On the Sin Nombre Trail, near a corner that is trickier to ride than it looks.

The caches in Sycamore Canyon more than a couple of miles from a trailhead are visited only every few months. They must be too far for most hikers to reach them, so I'm starting a series of caches that are on the central trails. The objectives of putting these caches are

1. To give mountain bikers some caches that are more than a few minutes from the trailhead
2. To give hikers who like long hikes some more caches
3. To provide more caches to encourage more cachers to venture into the heart of Sycamore Canynon
4. To encourage cachers to take up mountain biking to make it easier for them to get to these

Of course all cachers are encouraged to seek these out whether they arrive by bike, foot or horseback. In fact, some of these caches will be on trails that are closed to bikes so you won't be able to reach them on wheels! Also, bring some caches of your own to deploy while you're looking for these. There's plenty of room, and more deployers makes for a more interesting day of caching!

The terrain rating is high because of the distance from a trailhead. These caches are all near firm well-travelled trails.

Sycamore Canyon is part of the majestic Pt Mugu State Park and is immediately west of the Boney Mountain State Wilderness Area. You can find detailed maps and trail descriptions at VenturaCountyTrails.org on this page (visit link) . Print out the map and bring it with you to find the quickest way through the park.

The cache container is appropriate for the first in this series of mountain biking caches.

Only three of the FCC were available today - Big Foot Moose, Mountain Cat, and InsideVC, so we decided to do some caches in the Point Mugu state Park. We did a 12 mile loop through Hidden Pond and enjoyede the views and weather. Took a small detour to grab this one with help from Mountain Cat.

Half of the FCC consisting of Big Foot Moose, Mountain Cat and myself made a 12 mile loop through the park. Took this side trail before heading up the Hidden Pond Trail. Thanks

There was no entertainment to be had while I was here looking for the cache. I can see how this spot could be hazardous.

I was worried on the approach that I wasn't going to get over to the cache. Headed up the trail a bit and didn't have a problem.

I had a great day of geocaching in Point Mugu State Park today. For the full story, click here. (visit link)

I got this one on my way back to Sycamore Canyon. The area was a sea of poison oak, EXCEPT, at the exact spot where the cache was located. TFTC
