Geocache Description:

This is another Cache-n-dash cache with a mini mineralogy lesson. Please put the cache back the way you found it, otherwise it will not fit properly. Bring your own Pen.

Kaersutite is a mineral in the amphibole group. It's distinguishing characteristic from other amphiboles is its titanium content (~3-6% Ti). This mineral is interesting because it is sometimes found in rocks from the earths mantle and has allowed for estimates of the water content of the mantle (amphibole, like apatite, has water within its crystal structure). Kaersutite has also been found in some martian rocks, and planetary geologists hope to use the water content from the martian kaersutite to better understand the water budget on that planet as well. The following link has images of the mineral and gives inormation on its crystal structure, chemistry, and physical properties (visit link)
