Jenny and I always make it a point of stopping at this specific
rest area on the southbound 5 between San Clemente and Oceanside to
feed the largest and most domesticated population of ground
squirrels we have ever come across, while taking in a wonderful
panoramic view of the Pacific and once in awhile watching some
military manuevers starring the folks at marine corps base camp
pendleton.
Bring some nuts ( the squirrels eat them right from your hand,
and climb all over you if you want them to do so) and a camera.
Some times of the year the little guys are sleeping, but plenty of
seagulls to feed if you want to!
a magnetized altoids container--we tried to place it on various
traffic signs, but none are metallic, due to proximity to salty
ocean. you'll need a writing implement, there are small trade
items.
***YOU CAN ONLY ENTER THIS VIEWPOINT, REST AREA FROM THE
SOUTHBOUND 5 FREEWAY SOUTH OF SAN CLEMENTE/SAN ONOFRE.
